Common Causes of Hip Pain in Seniors

Hip pain can make daily life difficult for seniors. Learn common causes and how senior home care can help manage pain safely.

Hip pain is pretty much exactly what it sounds like—pain in the hip area. The hip is a joint where the femur (large upper thigh bone) connects with the pelvis.

The hip joint is the largest joint in the body and is involved in nearly every movement a person makes, from turning over in bed to sitting, standing, and walking. It is constantly working to help maintain balance, support the upper body, and allow movement.

For older adults, the hip has been working hard for decades, making it common for aches, stiffness, and other problems to develop over time.

Hip Pain Symptoms

Hip pain can feel different depending on its cause and where it originates. If your loved one is experiencing hip pain, they may notice one or more of the following:

  • Pain in the lower back: Hip pain can radiate into nearby areas, including the lower back.
  • Pain inside the hip joint: The discomfort may feel like it is coming directly from the bones or cartilage within the joint.
  • Pain near the surface of the hip: This type of pain is often caused by irritated muscles or tendons surrounding the joint.

Four Common Causes of Hip Pain in Seniors

1. Injuries

A fall or even bumping into furniture can cause bruising or injury that leads to significant hip pain.

2. Poor Posture

Poor posture while sitting or standing places extra pressure on the hips, which can contribute to pain over time.

3. Arthritis

Arthritis causes inflammation in the joints. When it affects the hip, it can result in pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility.

4. Bursitis

Bursitis occurs when the fluid-filled bursae that cushion the bones become irritated and inflamed, leading to pain around the hip.

Senior Home Care for Painful Hips

If hip pain is persistent, encourage your loved one to speak with their physician to determine the underlying cause. Once the source of the pain is identified, there are many ways to help reduce discomfort and make daily life more comfortable.

One of the most effective ways to manage acute pain is by using the RICE method.

R – Rest

Avoid activities and movements that worsen the pain.

This is also a great time for a senior home care provider to assist with household chores or daily activities that may aggravate the hip. If getting dressed, bathing, or other everyday tasks become difficult, a caregiver can provide the support your loved one needs while they recover.

I – Ice

Apply a cold compress to the affected area for 10–15 minutes at a time to help reduce swelling and inflammation.

C – Compression

Using a compression wrap or bandage can help reduce swelling and provide additional support to the injured area.

E – Elevation

When possible, lie down and elevate the hips with pillows to help reduce pain and swelling.

Helping Seniors Stay Comfortable

No one should have to accept living with chronic pain. By identifying the cause of hip pain, following appropriate treatment recommendations, and receiving support from a senior home care provider, older adults can stay more comfortable, remain independent, and continue enjoying life to the fullest.
